[WATCH] Shahid Afridi faces Shaheen Shah Afridi in the nets

A video of Shahid Afridi stepping into the nets to bat against Shaheen Shah Afridi has circulated widely on social media. The clip shows the former Pakistan captain playing a cover drive off his son-in-law’s bowling, offering a rare look at the two cricketers sharing a practice setting despite being separated in age by roughly two decades.

The post was shared on and drew quick attention given the well-known family connection between the two players. Shaheen married Shahid Afridi’s daughter Ansha on February 3, 2023, in a nikah ceremony, making the senior cricketer his father-in-law.

Shahid, born March 1, 1980, is a former Pakistani all-rounder who served as captain of the Pakistan national cricket team. A right-handed batsman and right-arm leg spinner, he represented Pakistan across all formats before retiring from international cricket.

Shaheen, born April 6, 2000, in Landi Kotal, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is a left-arm fast bowler and left-handed batsman. He made his international debut in 2018 and was named the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year in 2021, becoming the first Pakistani to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy. He currently captains Pakistan’s ODI side.

The nets clip arrives at a notable point in Shaheen’s schedule. Both he and Babar Azam were dropped from Pakistan’s T20I squad for the home series against Sri Lanka following their performances at the 2026 T20 World Cup. Sahibzada Farhan was appointed to lead the side in their absence.

Shaheen’s most recent ODI appearance came on May 30, 2026, against Australia, the first match of a three-game series that Pakistan won 2-1. He claimed seven wickets across that series while also serving as captain. His last listed first-class match was the Bangladesh versus Pakistan fixture at Mirpur, played between May 8 and 12, 2026.

With the T20I squad moving in a new direction under Farhan, Shaheen is reported to be directing attention toward red-ball cricket alongside his ODI captaincy duties. The nets session with his father-in-law, captured and shared online, provided a lighter moment during that transition period.
