Legendary commentator Ravi Shastri has long been associated with some of the most iconic moments in Indian cricket history. From being on commentary when Yuvraj Singh smashed six sixes in an over to delivering the unforgettable line “Dhoni finishes off in style” during India’s triumph in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, his voice has accompanied several historic milestones for Indian fans.

Given that reputation, many expected another memorable commentary line when India closed in on victory in the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand on March 8, Sunday. With the Men in Blue just one wicket away from sealing the title and Shastri behind the microphone, fans anticipated a moment that would remain iconic for the years to come.

However, the final moment of the match turned out to be slightly anticlimactic on the commentary front. When Abhishek Sharma dismissed Jacob Duffy, who was caught in the deep by Tilak Varma, India officially sealed the victory. But Shastri initially appeared to misjudge the situation, mistakenly believing it was only the ninth wicket.

“Taken in the deep. The ninth wicket goes down,” Shastri said on air before quickly realising the error. He then corrected himself moments later.

“And it’s all done, actually. It’s India who win the World Cup for the third time. The first team to win back-to-back World Cups and the first hosts to win the T20 World Cup on their home turf. It’s a fantastic performance for India.”

Although the former India head coach attempted to recover quickly, it was a brain-fade moment at one of Indian cricket’s biggest moments, and the blunder did not go unnoticed.

Fans on X were quick to react, with many joking that the commentator had “ruined” what could have been another iconic line during India’s World Cup-winning moment.

Despite Shastri’s fumble in the commentary box, it does not make the Indian team’s achievement any less. They became the only team in T20 World Cup’s history to win the title three times, and only the first team to defend their title successfully.
