The crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, was spotted making a special demand, asking Ishan Kishan to roll his arm over, as India moved closer to a victory during their T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand on Sunday, March 08. The wicketkeeper-batter had already played an impactful knock during the first innings, helping the Men in Blue post a mammoth total of 255 for 5 in 20 overs.

The fans’ request, though, was not fulfilled, as it was Abhishek Sharma who bowled the 19th over instead. On the final ball of the penultimate over, Jacob Duffy skied one in the air, with Tilak Varma completing a simple catch to bundle the BlackCaps out for just 159, as the Suryakumar Yadav-led side eventually won the match by 96 runs.

Speaking of Kishan’s contributions with the bat, the southpaw came in to bat at No. 3, as Abhishek had departed after providing India a rollicking start with his 21-ball 52. Ishan did not let the dismissal affect the momentum at all, setting the stage ablaze with his 54-run knock off just 25 balls, which included four fours and as many maximums. He was also involved in a 105-run partnership with Sanju Samson (89 off 46).

In the entire tournament, Kishan had been providing the Indians with some crucial runs from his marauding blade. His 317 runs in the global event proved to be vital for the Indian team, where he was also the second-highest run-getter for the champions and fourth-highest overall. The Patna-born cricketer made three half-centuries in the marquee event.

The comeback that Kishan made into the Indian team is one of the most inspiring ones. Before making a  return to the T20I squad in January this year, Kishan had to stay away for more than a couple of years. However, consistency with the bat and strong performances in the domestic circuit, where he top-scored in Jharkhand’s title-winning run at the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, proved to be vital in him being called by the selectors to play a crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup campaign.
