Jasprit Bumrah produced two near-identical deliveries to claim his second and third wicket on Day 1 of the first Test between India and West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, October 2. Bumrah ended up with three wickets to his name as West Indies were bundled out for 162 in 44.1 overs .
Justin Greaves (32 off 48), the eventual top-scorer of the touring side, was undone by sheer pace on the final delivery of the 39th over. He tried getting his bat down but the ball had already zipped past to send the off stump cartwheeling. Debutant Johann Layne was Bumrah’s third dismissal in his next over. The 141 kph fullish delivery beat Layne all ends up to rattle the furniture.
Earlier in the day, West Indies had won the toss and opted to bat first. The new-ball duo of Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj put West Indies under pressure in the opening session as the visitors lost half their side by the time Lunch was called. They were 90/5 in 23.2 overs by the end of the first session. They could add only 72 more after that.
Siraj ended up with a four-fer under his belt while Bumrah scalped three. Kuldeep Yadav picked up a couple, while Washington Sundar chipped in with one. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Ravindra Jadeja returned wicketless.
India would be keen on making the most of the third session to cut down the deficit as much as possible. They come into this series as heavy favourites and will aim on staying true to the tag. Notably, this is their first home Test series after the 0-3 debacle against New Zealand last year.
