Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis stated that Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) success in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season could largely depend on the kind of pitches they prepare at Eden Gardens. He emphasised that KKR should tailor their home surfaces to maximise the effectiveness of their premier spinners.

Du Plessis highlighted Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy as potential match-winners who can dominate under spin-friendly conditions. KKR are set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium, before hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad in their first home fixture.

“If I was part of the KKR team management, I would ask the groundsman at Eden Gardens to make the wicket spin-friendly. KKR are blessed to have two absolute canons in Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine. They are two of the best T20 spinners in the game right now. Both Varun and Narine have to be in the game. If they play on surfaces where they are not in contention, then you are losing those two cannons and your superpower. Yes, they can bowl well on any wicket and trouble batters. But for KKR to be successful in this IPL, Varun and Narine need to fire. The pitch should be prepared keeping those two players in mind,” du Plessis said on Hotstar’s Game Plan.

Kolkata Knight Riders endured a difficult time at home last season, managing just two wins at Eden Gardens. The franchise initially played on slower tracks but later requested more batting-friendly surfaces from the Cricket Association of Bengal. Although the venue then produced high-scoring encounters, the change did not significantly improve their results.

If KKR decide to return to spin-friendly pitches this season, their batting unit could face added scrutiny. The line-up includes several pace-hitters like Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Cameron Green, who generally excel on true, batting-friendly surfaces. On the other hand, players like Angkrish Raghuvanshi and skipper Ajinkya Rahane bring technical solidity but could be susceptible to getting tied down during the middle overs on slower tracks.
