India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Rohit Sharma has revealed what he told Sanju Samson during their meeting earlier in the tournament when the Kerala batter was dropped from the playing XI. The clip has gone viral now after Sanju Samson’s epic return.
Rohit has opened up on what his intentions were while he interacted with the current India opener. The former India captain felt it was necessary to give Samson some motivation after losing his place in the playing XI.
Rohit was seen giving pep talk to the right-hander after Samson’s iconic knock against West Indies, asking him not to be disappointed about being dropped. When Samson got the chance, he grabbed it with both hands, playing extraordinary knocks, helping India reach the final of the T20 World Cup 2026.
“I can sometimes feel the pulse of the player. I have been myself in that place where, you know, when I’ve been in a tournament like this and my chances haven’t come, it’s important to stay focused and try and do the right things and not get frustrated with you not getting the opportunity. And that’s what I felt with him because he was consistently playing for India and then was dropped just before the World Cup started,” said Rohit Sharma in a video posted by ICC.
Rohit further noted that he also experienced such times and could relate with the wicketkeeper-batter’s situation. His prediction came true when Samson got the chance against the West Indies, and he delivered.
“You know, I just wanted to tell him that it’s a long tournament and funny things have happened in the past. So I just wanted to reassure him that your chance will come. So it happened in the game where it was a crucial game for India and he played a blinder,” he concluded.
