A pumped-up Mohammed Siraj was captured in ecstasy after dismissing English skipper Ben Stokes on Day 3 of the first Test between England and India at Headingley, Leeds. The England captain was Siraj’s first wicket in the Test after toiling hard to take one for 17 overs in the innings.

A round-the-wicket delivery by Siraj was angled on a length. The ball nipped away after pitching, drawing Stokes into the stroke. With a silly mid-off in place, The Three Lions all-rounder aimed to play the ball a little squarer. All he could do was end up grazing the ball to the wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, turning back only to find that the catch has been completed.

Stokes was not the first batter to fall for the hosts. A few overs earlier, Ollie Pope (106 off 137) departed off the bowling of Prasidh Krishna by intending to cut the ball away. However, the centurion was only able to graze the ball to the wicketkeeper Pant.

England ended the second day on 209/3 in 49 overs. All three of the English wickets were scalped by spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. A batting meltdown earlier in the day meant India were bowled out for 471 after looking well set to surpass the 550-run mark previously.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 off 159), Shubman Gill (147 off 227), and Pant (134 off 178) were the three centurions for the Indian outfit. As for England, Josh Tongue (4/86 in 20 overs) and Stokes (4/66 in 20 overs) shared eight wickets between them.

Zak Crawley (4 off 6) was dismissed in the very first over of his side’s innings. However, Ben Duckett (62 off 94) combined with Pope to ensure England got to a better position. Joe Root was dismissed late in the day by Bumrah. The seasoned batter walked back after scoring only 28. As of writing, the hosts currently trail by 144 runs, but they will aim to go past India’s total, whereas the visitors would be banking on their bowlers to wrap things up.
