The right-arm pacer Akash Deep delivered a match-winning performance in India’s historic Test victory at Edgbaston. He shared a deeply emotional story that added more weight to his achievement as the Bihar-born revealed that his elder sister has been diagnosed with cancer and has been battling the disease for the past two months.

Notably, Deep played a pivotal role in India’s first-ever Test win at the iconic venue, as he claimed 10 wickets in the match, finishing with figures of 4/88 in the first innings and 6/99 in the second. India’s emphatic 336-run win over England not only leveled the series but also marked a personal milestone for Deep. He is only the second Indian pacer to take a 10-wicket haul in a Test in England after Chetan Sharma’s 10/188 from 1986.

“I have not told this to anyone. My elder sister has been suffering from cancer for the last two months. She is now stable, and she is fine. I think she will be the happiest (seeing my performance). I want to dedicate this match to her. I wanted to see a smile on her face,” Deep said to Sony Sports Network.

“This is for you. Whenever I held the ball in my hand, your face was in my mind. I want to see happiness in your face. We are all with you,” he added.

India’s triumph was historic on multiple fronts, as it marked their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston, a venue where they had previously played eight Tests, lost seven and drawn one. Additionally, it became India’s biggest win in Test cricket away from home in terms of runs, surpassing their 318-run victory over West Indies in 2019.
