England captain Harry Brook has made his team’s intentions clear ahead of the fifth and final T20I against India, saying the hosts are determined to complete a commanding 4-0 series sweep and reclaim the No. 1 spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings.
England sealed the five-match series with a game to spare after a dominant nine-wicket victory in the fourth T20I. Brook led from the front with a scintillating unbeaten 79 off just 35 deliveries, while Phil Salt struck 59 off 42 balls. The duo stitched together an unbeaten 146-run partnership to chase down the target with more than six overs remaining.
With the series already in the bag, England now have another major incentive heading into the final T20I in Southampton. A victory would see them leapfrog reigning ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions India to become the top-ranked men’s T20I side in the world.
Speaking after England’s series-clinching win, Brook said his side is fully focused on finishing the series on a high and achieving the No. 1 ranking.
“To beat India 4-0 would be a pretty special series win if I’m being honest. And to go No.1 in the world would be even better. That is our main aim. We want to go out there and try and beat them convincingly again,” Brook was quoted as saying by My Khel.
The England skipper added that the players are well aware of what is at stake in the series finale.
“We’ve been told if we win the next game, we go to world No.1, and that’s definitely a prize that we’re eyeing up.”
Brook also acknowledged the strength of the Indian side but credited England’s execution for their dominant performances throughout the series.
“India are a strong side. They probably haven’t been as good in this series as they have been over the last couple of years, but we’re really happy with the way that we’ve executed our plans,” he concluded.
England will now head into the fifth and final T20I in Southampton on July 11 looking to complete a comprehensive 4-0 series victory and reclaim the No. 1 spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings.
