Former India Under-19 and Punjab fast bowler Amanpreet Singh Gill passed away at the age of 36 in Chandigarh on Wednesday, May 6, leaving the cricket fraternity in grief. The cause of death is not yet known.

Gill was Virat Kohli’s teammate at the India Under-19 level. He represented the Punjab cricket team in domestic cricket and picked up 11 wickets in six first-class matches. The right-arm seamer was also a part of the Punjab Kings’ (then Kings XI Punjab) side during the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008.

Gill later served as a member of Punjab’s senior selection committee. Upon hearing the news of his demise, legendary cricketers Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh shared their condolences on social media.

Yuvraj, meanwhile, recalled his days sharing the dressing room with Gill. The Player of the Tournament in the 2011 ODI World Cup said that Gill was a hardworking cricketer who was passionate about the sport.

Gill played several youth one-dayers and a three-day youth “Test” for India in 2007, touring England, Malaysia and Sri Lanka with the U-19 team in that period. However, he could not find a place in the Kohli-led India side that went on to win the 2008 Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia.
