Vaibhav Sooryavanshi left out of India U-19 squad due to BCCI rule on multiple World Cup appearances

The BCCI has named its India U-19 squad for a home assignment against Australia, with Aaryavir Sehwag and Anvay Dravid among the notable inclusions. Conspicuously absent is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who, at 15 years old, has already made his senior T20I debut for India against England, yet finds no place in the junior set-up.

The Junior Men’s Selection Committee announced squads covering three 50-over matches in Rajkot on September 18, 21 and 23, plus two red-ball multi-day fixtures. The first red-ball game runs September 27-30 in Rajkot, and the second takes place October 5-8 at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium ‘B’ Ground.

As reported by NDTV, a specific BCCI regulation is the reason behind his omission. The board put a restriction in place in 2016 that prevents any player from appearing in more than one edition of the U-19 World Cup, regardless of whether they remain within the age bracket. Because Sooryavanshi featured in the 2026 U-19 World Cup, he cannot participate in a future edition and has therefore been excluded from the current U-19 planning cycle altogether.

The 2016 regulation was not without precedent in its impact. Washington Sundar was the first prominent casualty, barred from the 2018 U-19 World Cup despite being age-eligible at the time. Before the rule existed, players such as Sarfaraz Khan, Sandeep Sharma and Vijay Zol had each appeared in more than one edition of the tournament without restriction. The BCCI introduced the cap specifically to prevent that pattern from continuing, and Sooryavanshi now becomes the latest player to be caught by it after his 2026 World Cup participation.

Manal Chauhan and Chigurupati Venkata are fresh additions to the 50-over squad, whereas Sagar Virk, Anmoljeet Singh and Ishan Sood have not been retained.
