India hold a 1-0 lead in the five-match series after claiming victory in the first T20I by 8 wickets. The second match at JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi on October 9 will test both teams’ ability to execute under pressure as West Indies look to level the series.

Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten 102 off 42 balls in the opening match set the tone for India’s dominant performance. West Indies will need to tighten their bowling execution and capitalise on key moments to stay competitive in the series. Both teams possess star players in key roles, who could define the outcomes of the matches. We take a look at three matchups that could tilt the needle in one team’s favour.

Abhishek Sharma vs Roston Chase

Abhishek Sharma has accumulated 832 runs across 30 T20I innings in 2026 at a strike rate of 205.94, establishing himself as a destructive force in the powerplay. He will be looking to continue this run into the second T20I and return with a big score

Roston Chase dismissed Sharma for 21 in the first T20I and will look to repeat that success by bowling off-spin in the powerplay to counter his aggressive approach. Chase’s ability to vary pace and line will be tested against Sharma’s intent to dominate the opening overs.

Sherfane Rutherford vs Arshdeep Singh

Sherfane Rutherford struck 56 off 34 balls in the first match, playing a key role in West Indies’ death-overs batting. The southpaw hit six fours and three sixes in his knock, and his six-hitting prowess could help change games on his own.

Arshdeep Singh, India’s senior pacer, will need to contain Rutherford’s aggressive intent during the middle and death phases of the innings. Rutherford’s ability to accelerate quickly makes him a dangerous opponent for any bowler operating in the latter stages of the innings, and arshdeep, as the senior bowler will have to tie the batter down.

Shreyas Iyer vs Akeal Hosein

Shreyas Iyer‘s explosive century was the point of difference between the two teams in the first T20I. India’s skipper scored a brilliant unbeaten 102 off just 42 balls, guiding his team in the chase and ensuring his presence in the end to finish the game off. He hit ten fours and six sixes in a brutal and clinical display of hitting and dominance.

The pick of the bowlers for the West Indies was Akeal Hosein, who bowled 4 overs for 37 runs and took 1 wicket in the first T20I. Hosein’s ability to slow the powerplay will be crucial as he attempts to restrict India’s scoring in the opening overs of the second match. The West Indies left-arm spinner will need to adjust his lines and lengths to prevent another dominant display from the Indian batter.
