Top English cricket figure under investigation for alleged sexual misconduct

A leading figure in English cricket has been accused of sexual misconduct, with the allegation surfacing just two months before the start of the Ashes series between England and Australia.

According to a report in The Telegraph, the individual said to be in his 40s is under police investigation over claims of spiking two women and sexually assaulting one of them. The alleged incident occurred on May 22 in the SW6 area of London, which covers Fulham and Parsons Green.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the man was questioned on June 5 in connection with the case. However, they have not named the individual, and no arrests have been made so far.

“Two women are believed to have been spiked, with one also allegedly sexually assaulted. A man in his 40s was interviewed under caution on Thursday, June 5. Enquiries remain ongoing and no arrests have been made at this stage,” the police statement read as quoted by NDTV Sports.

The latest allegation against a top English cricket figure comes just days after an unnamed former county cricket coach was suspended over charges of sexual misconduct. The ex-coach was handed a nine-month suspension by the independent Cricket Discipline Panel (CDP) for misconduct that included sending sexually explicit photos to two junior female colleagues.

Meanwhile, on the field, the England men’s team is currently engaged in a three-match T20I series against South Africa. The Harry Brook-led side trails 0-1 after a 14-run defeat (DLS method) in the series opener in Cardiff.

The first T20I was heavily impacted by rain, with the start delayed by nearly four hours before further interruptions forced the contest to be reduced to just 12.5 overs in total. Set a daunting revised target of 69 in five overs, England could only manage 54/5 against a disciplined South African attack. Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch picked up two wickets each to ensure South Africa secured victory in the rain-marred contest at Sophia Gardens.
