The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League came to a close with some of the most exciting cricket played. Records were broken aplenty as new players and old ones took the league by storm. The run-scoring in the league has been on an upward trend, and all the records are indicative of that. Every year, the tournament sets benchmarks which appear to be permanent until the following year comes on and new records and milestones are set.

Here are the five biggest records broken in IPL 2026

5) Most sixes by a player in a single IPL season: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi – 72

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was the talk of the town in IPL 2026. The way the 15-year-old southpaw took on the best of the bowlers was a sight to behold. He had a record-breaking run in his sophomore year of IPL cricket, scoring a mammoth 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.70. The young prodigy played a key role in the Rajasthan Royals’ run to the playoffs and was their most dangerous batter.

He broke Chris Gayle’s age-old record of the most sixes hit by a batter in a single IPL season. He hit a massive 72 sixes in the entire season, taking down bowlers mercilessly. He hit a massive 12 sixes in his playoff knock against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he scored 97 runs from just 29 balls, the most sixes hit by a batter in a playoff innings in IPL.

Highest successful run chase in T20s: Punjab Kings – 265/4

The Punjab Kings in the 2026 season broke their own previous record of the highest ever successful chase in the T20 format, with a thrilling six-wicket win over the Delhi Capitals. Electing to bat, the Capitals scored a mammoth  264 for 2 in their 20 overs, with KL Rahul scoring an unbeaten 152 off just 67 balls, the highest score by an Indian batter in the IPL. He put on a mammoth stand of 220 off just 98 balls with Nitish Rana, who scored a 44-ball 91.

Chasing the daunting total, the Kings got off to a flyer with a 126-run opening stand off just 42 balls between Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, with the former scoring a 17-ball 43 and the latter scoring a brilliant 76 off just 26 balls. They lost a few wickets in between, but were led home by captain Shreyas Iyer, who finished unbeaten on 71 off 36 balls. Despite the big target, the Kings got home without breaking much of a sweat, reaching home with seven balls to spare and six wickets in hand. 

Best strike rate for a player in an IPL season: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi – 237.70

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once more features on this list, this time for his impressive strike rate. His 776 runs have come at a strike rate of 237.70, the highest season strike rate. The award, first handed out in 2018, has seen just three winners with a strike rate of over 200, of which Sooryavanshi’s has been the highest, marginally ahead of Australian batter Jake Fraser-McGurk’s 234.04 from IPL 2024. 

The young southpaw scored 252 runs in the 2025 season at a strike rate of 206.56, and in 2026, he took his game up a notch. He scored five half-centuries, of which three were scores in the 90s. His run tally of 776 runs also saw him become the youngest player to win the Orange Cap.

Most individual centuries in a single season: 15

The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League had the most individual centuries in one season. The 15 centuries scored in the 2026 edition eclipsed the 14 scored in 2014. In another first, this edition of the IPL was also the first instance where players from all teams have scored a century.

Sanju Samson led the way as the only player to score two centuries. The Mumbai Indians are the team with the most centurions, with hundreds by Tilak Varma, Quinton de Kock and Ryan Ricketlon. Virat Kohli scored a record-breaking ninth IPL century, while the fastest of the season was scored by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, off just 36 balls. KL Rahul’s unbeaten 152 was the highest score of the season, and the highest ever by an Indian batter in the IPL. 

Most individual awards for a player in a single season: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi – 5

It would be a once-in-a-blue-moon phenomenon for a 15-year-old to come into a professional sports setting and dominate as if they had been around for years. That is exactly what Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did. The young prodigy features on this list for the third time, becoming the youngest player to win the IPL awards and the first player to win a whopping five individual awards in a single season. 

Sooryavanshi’s 72 sixes and strike rate of 237.70 were the highest for a batter in the 2026 season. His 776 runs saw him win the Orange Cap. Sai Sudharsan, in 2025, won the Orange Cap alongside the Emerging Player award. Sooryavanshi took it one step further, also winning the Most Valuable Player award along with the other two. His exploits in the 2026 season led him to become the youngest player to be called up to the Indian team, as he has been selected in the squad for the series against Ireland and England.
