Under Gautam Gambhir‘s ongoing tenure as the Indian team’s head coach, there have been several lows that the team has suffered, and the latest of the lot was the 0-2 series whitewash against Ireland. Following the shambolic drubbing against the Irishmen, social media has erupted in asking for Gambhir’s sacking. Iceland Cricket also joined the debate, taking a cheeky dig at the 44-year-old.

The cricket board, popular more for its hilarious memes and opinions on Twitter (now ‘X’), took a subtle jibe at Gambhir by saying that they cannot recruit the latter as their head coach, despite him possessing skills and talent to do so. Furthermore, they wrote in a sly manner that what Gambhir did with the Indian team, the current T20 World Cup champions, against the Irishmen is something worth taking a note of.

“We can confirm that we don’t wish to add Gautam Gambhir to our coaching staff. He clearly has talent, though. To take those Indian players and deliver those results in Ireland takes truly remarkable gifts,” Iceland Cricket shared in a hilarious post on their social media handle.

Before the disappointment against Ireland, Gambhir had been the coach during India‘s white-ball series loss against Sri Lanka, which was also his first assignment with the Men in Blue. In November 2024, the side was also whitewashed 0-3 by New Zealand at home, resulting in their first home series loss in over twelve years. They also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, followed by home losses to South Africa and the Black Caps as well.

However, it is also noteworthy to mention that the Indian team has emerged glorious quite a few times since Gambhir took over. In his first ICC assignment as the Indian coach, Gambhir stewarded the side to a Champions Trophy title and followed it up with an Asia Cup triumph in 2025. He also took a new Indian Test team to England and drew 2-2. Lastly, he was also lauded for his exceptional coaching in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

As a result, there cannot be one conclusion to Gambhir’s tenure, and it will be interesting to keep eyes on what he goes on to achieve with the team by the end of his coaching stint, which will culminate with the 2027 World Cup.
