‘There are a lot of areas we could have done better’ – Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana after 71-run win vs Indonesia

Bangladesh defeated Indonesia by 71 runs in the fourth match of Group B at the Women’s Asia Cup on Monday, August 31, at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The hosts compiled 129 for 8 in their 20 overs before dismissing Indonesia for 58 all out in 17.3 overs. Despite the commanding victory, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty identified areas where her team fell short of expectations.

Sultana reflected on the performance immediately after the match, acknowledging that her side had not executed their plans as intended. The captain’s assessment came despite Bangladesh’s commendable display with both bat and ball, which helped them secure a comprehensive win and strengthen their position in the group stage.

“There are a lot of areas we could have done better,” Sultana was quoted as saying by The Daily Star after the match.

Sultana identifies areas for improvement despite dominant display

Sobhana Mostary top-scored with a 42-ball 40, and Shorna Akter remained unbeaten on 31 off 18 balls as Bangladesh built their total of 129 for 8. The batting contributions provided a foundation that proved decisive in the match outcome. Nahida Akter took 3 for 15 while Marufa Akter claimed 2 for 6 as Bangladesh’s bowlers dismantled Indonesia’s innings. Nahida Akter was awarded Player of the Match for her sensational bowling performance.

Sultana emphasised the importance of bowling discipline and accuracy in the matches ahead. The captain stressed that her team had time to correct their mistakes before facing their next opponent in the tournament.

“We need to bowl more in the right areas, we do have some time before our next game so we’ll rectify our mistakes,” Sultana said.

Bangladesh’s next assignment in the tournament is against Sri Lanka, the reigning champions, on Sunday at the same venue. The team aims to finish within the top two of their group to secure a place in the semi-final. Sultana’s emphasis on correcting mistakes before that encounter underscored the importance of the upcoming fixture in determining the team’s path through the tournament.
