Former India opener Aakash Chopra has opened up on England’s chances in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which is slated to start on February 7, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
England are placed in Group C along with West Indies, Nepal, Italy and Scotland. Scotland recently replaced Bangladesh, and according to Chopra, that has weakened the group significantly. He also opined that the flat nature of the wickets in India will suit the Harry Brook led side.
“This team’s biggest strength is that their matches are in fantastic places. One, they have come in an excellent group. Earlier, it seemed like their group would be very entertaining because the West Indies, England, and Nepal are good teams, and Bangladesh is a decent team in these conditions,” he said on his YouTube channel ‘Aakash Chopra’.
“However, Bangladesh is not there anymore. Scotland have come. Scotland generally troubles England a little, but I feel they won’t be able to do that here, and Italy will also not be able to do so. They should qualify easily. Their job has become easy,” he observed.
While praising the Three Lions’ batting style and depth, the ace commentator believes that they have the power to bully the opposition, especially at the venues like Wankhede Stadium and Eden Gardens.
“All their matches are in Kolkata and Mumbai. They will play on flat pitches. There can’t be better conditions than this to hit sixes. So they can actually bully the opposition. They have such kind of batting depth. So that will be one strength,” Chopra noted.
‘They have batting firepower’ – Aakash Chopra on England’s explosive batting
The former Delhi batter further believes that England have the strongest batting line-up with big hitters like Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Harry Brook, and Jacob Bethel in their arsenal. And this will be their strategy to dominate the opposition.
“Secondly, they have batting firepower, absolute firepower. In the top eight, Sam Curran bats the slowest, and even his strike rate is 131.6. It means, in batting, there are many fantastic players who hit a lot,” he concluded.
England are currently involved in a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka and have won the opening match of the series.
