‘The Cup can be taken away, but we are champions’ – Varun Chakravarthy on viral coffee mug trophy post

Despite the Asia Cup 2025 trophy presentation controversy, the Indian players ensured to celebrate after clinching the title. Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy recently opened up on his quirky “coffee cup” celebration, which soon went viral.

Following India’s title win, there was some confusion over the trophy handover. However, captain Suryakumar Yadav and his teammates celebrated without the prized gold, as the skipper even recreated Rohit Sharma’s famous slow walk from the 2024 T20 World Cup final before pretending to lift an imaginary trophy.

Chakravarthy revealed that his viral Instagram post, showing him asleep with a coffee cup, was actually a light-hearted improvisation. The spinner, who picked up seven wickets in six matches at an average of 20.42 during the tournament, said he had initially planned to pose with the trophy itself after the victory.

“I knew that we were going to win. By the time we won the second match, I knew that if we meet them in the finals we are going to win. So I had planned everything. I had planned I will sleep and take a photo with the cup next to me. But after the match, there was nothing next to me. There was just a coffee cup, so I went ahead with it. I knew that we would win all games. We are the number one team in the World. The Cup can be taken away, but we are champions,” said Chakravarthy on Breakfast with Champions.

I’ve always been an introvert: Chakravarthy 

The spinner further revealed he has been an introvert but enjoys a bit of dark humour here and there. He went on to speak about his love for writing, helping him switch off from cricket.

“I’ve always been an introvert. I’m not like Arshdeep or Nayar, who are outspoken and can crack jokes. I have a slightly dark humour. After practice, I go to my room, to stay away from cricket, I keep writing. I love writing. It brings out what’s within me outside and helps me visualize. By the end, I totally forgot that I was a cricketer and I have a match to play the next day,” said Chakravarthy.
