Simon Doull has analysed his take on who is going to hold an upper hand between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans ahead of the Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League 2026. According to the popular commentator, the contest between the top two teams is going to be a tight one to predict, but he has also laid emphasis on the role that the powerplay overs will play on Tuesday, May 26.
The clash is set to be played at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala, and Doull believes that the side that begins well in this match during their respective powerplay overs is likely to eventually book a direct entry into the finals of the tournament. Given the form and team combination of both sides, Doull has highlighted that it will be crucial for RCB and GT to carry the winning momentum into the business end, too.
“Whoever wins the powerplay in the first innings will go on to win the match. That is my belief. Both GT and RCB have strong batting lineups and quality bowling attacks. This is going to be a tight contest. Both teams are in great form and carrying winning momentum into the playoffs. Each side has match-winners who can change the game in a matter of overs,” he was quoted as saying by JioStar.
One of the spiciest matchups in the RCB versus GT clash, according to Doull, is going to be the one between Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, the openers for their respective sides. He has also said that whoever of the two gets a big score on Tuesday is set to be a differentiating factor in the all-important encounter in Dharamsala.
“One team has Virat Kohli; the other has Shubman Gill. Both are in red-hot form. If the openers can get through the first six overs without much damage and put up 60 or 70 runs, it puts the opposition under immediate pressure.
“In big games, early momentum is everything. The battle between Kohli and Shubman Gill could decide the outcome. Whichever batter scores more runs and stays longer at the crease will likely take his team through. In playoff cricket, it often comes down to which superstar steps up when it matters most,” the former New Zealand cricketer expressed.
RCB finished at the spot of the points table at the end of the league stage, collecting 18 points from their nine wins in 14 games. GT also had a similar fate in the league-stage campaign, but a slightly lower net run rate of 0.695 against RCB’s 0.783 forced them to settle at the second position. However, both the sides have looked in good form, which makes the Qualifier 1 an extremely mouthwatering contest to watch.
