‘That’s all for show’ – Stuart Broad tears into Imam-ul-Haq over Lord’s injury antics

Pakistan batter Imam-ul-Haq sustained a Grade 1 tear to his left calf muscle during the second Test against England at Lord’s. The injury occurred as he fielded on the opening day, forcing him off the field after tea. Salman Ali Agha replaced him as substitute fielder, and Imam took no further part in the match. He did not bat in Pakistan’s first innings on day two as the visitors were bowled out for 110 in fewer than 38 overs in reply to England’s 290.

Broad’s assessment of the sideline display

On day four of the Test, Imam was observed on the sidelines with tape covering his left calf, moving with difficulty as he practised batting strokes. The display drew scrutiny from former England fast bowler Stuart Broad, who offered a pointed assessment of the Pakistan batter’s conduct during the broadcast.

“That’s all for show. He has got a bit of stick from media and maybe his teammates. Whatever,” Broad said on Sky Sports Cricket.

“You can do that inside the indoor school without anyone seeing, don’t have to come wearing shorts and tape and hobble around like that. I am not impressed with that. Sorry,” he added.

Broad’s criticism centred on the visibility of Imam’s injury management, suggesting that rehabilitation work could be conducted privately rather than in public view. The former pacer’s remarks reflected scepticism about the necessity of the sideline display during an active Test match.

Imam’s performance and injury timeline

Imam’s performance in the series had already drawn attention. In the first Test at Headingley, he scored 42 runs in the first innings and shared a 91-run third-wicket stand with Abdullah Shafique, though Pakistan lost that match by an innings and 103 runs. At Lord’s, Imam also dropped two catches while fielding on day one before sustaining the calf injury.

Pakistan’s physiotherapy team advised Imam to rest for 10 days following scans conducted at the end of the first day’s play. The injury timeline and Broad’s public questioning of the batter’s conduct became focal points in discussions surrounding Pakistan’s performance in the Test series against England.
