The upcoming T20 World Cup is expected to feature some high-scoring encounters, especially in matches held in India. In the last few seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL), some mammoth totals have not just been scored in the first innings but also chased down.
Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri picked India and Australia as the two teams that can breach the 300-run mark in the 10th edition of the marquee event.
“I think Australia, India look as the teams to pass that 300-run mark. These are the two teams I would pick as the frontrunners to get this because of the kind of players both have. Very explosive, esepcially at the top and if one guy gets 100 at the top, then you’re close to that 300,” Shastri told Sanjana Ganesan on the ICC Review.
Interestingly, the highest total in T20 World Cup history is the 260 that Sri Lanka amassed in the inaugural edition in 2007 against Kenya in Johannesburg. India’s highest score in the tournament also came in the same edition against England (218). Meanwhile, Australia’s highest score is 201.
When you’re defending your title and when you’re playing at home, there is pressure and it comes from nowhere: Shastri
Shastri believes that Suryakumar Yadav and Co. will feel the pressure as they will be defending the title in their own backyard. The former India all-rounder said that the start to the tournament is going to be very important for the Asian giants.
“When you’re defending your title and when you’re playing at home, there is pressure and it comes from nowhere. You have a bad 15 minutes, a bad 10 minutes in a T20 game, it can decide the outcome of the game. And often, you lose those 10 minutes or 15 minutes because of pressure. So, it’s how India handles that pressure, the way they start the tournament. If they start well, even if there is a hiccup on the way, they have got depth in batting to pull them out of it,” Shastri noted.
India are placed in Group A along with Pakistan, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the USA. They begin their campaign on February 7 with a clash against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
