The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 got off to thrilling start as Pakistan and Netherlands put on a classic in a nail-biting encounter in Colombo. The clash between Afghanistan and New Zealand on February 8 promises to be another fascinating battle. With both sides eyeing a strong start in the group stage, the match could play a crucial role in shaping their campaign in the tournament co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Afghanistan arrive with growing confidence, having established themselves as a dangerous force in T20 cricket on the back of their potent spin attack and fearless batting approach. New Zealand, on the other hand, bring vast tournament experience and a reputation for thriving in high-pressure situations, making them a tough opponent on the global stage.

Beyond the team dynamics, the encounter is set to feature several key individual battles that could decide the outcome. Whether it is Afghanistan’s spinners looking to control the middle overs or New Zealand’s power-hitters aiming to dominate from the outset.

Here all the top-three players to watch out in New Zealand vs Afghanistan, ICC T20 World Cup 2026-

Matt Henry vs Rahmanullah Gurbaz

It will be a battle of the new ball between Matt Henry and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The Afghanistan opener has been one of the consistent T20 players all around the globe, whereas Matt Henry is known for his threatening opening spells with the new ball.

In T20 cricket, Gurbaz has faced the Kiwi pacer just once, and has dominated Henry. In five balls, the Afghan batter has scored nine runs, at a healthy strike rate of 180. Even though the sample is small, it clearly favours Gurbaz.

Finn Allen vs Noor Ahmed

Finn Allen is coming off after a solid BBL campaign with the Perth Scorchers. Whereas Noor Ahmad is one of the most promising T20 players in franchise cricket. New Zealand will be hoping for Allen to light up the World Cup considering his recent run, but it will not be easy against the Afghanistan spinners.

With the match scheduled at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, the pitch might favour spinners even more. The duo have faced each other two times in T20I cricket, with the Kiwi batter dominating the contest. In 19 balls, he has scored 36 runs, at a strike rate of 189, without getting out once off the left-arm wrist spinner.

Glenn Phillips vs Rashid Khan

This will be a key battle in the middle overs. Glenn Phillips, one of the strongest players of spin off against Rashid Khan, arguably the best spinner currently. The New Zealand all-rounder has fared pretty well against Rashid.

He has scored 40 runs off 29 balls against the leg-spinner in five innings without giving away his wicket. The Afghan spinner will look to improve the record, and this battle will be a key factor in deciding which team gets an upper hand.
