T20 World Cup 2026: ‘Killing the generation’ – Kapil Dev slams PCB for boycotting India vs Pakistan clash

The India–Pakistan rivalry is widely regarded as the most intense contest in world cricket. But ahead of the much-anticipated clash at T20 World Cup 2026, the spotlight has shifted from the pitch to politics and administration. Pakistan’s decision to boycott their February 15 clash against India in Colombo has triggered widespread backlash, raising serious questions about the long-term consequences for Pakistan cricket.

Pakistan confirmed on Sunday that while they will participate in the tournament, they will forfeit the marquee group-stage fixture against India. The decision came after the ICC rejected Bangladesh’s request to move matches out of India, sparking confusion and criticism from broadcasters, former cricketers, and fans worldwide.

One of the strongest reactions has come from the legendary Kapil Dev, who believes the move has little to do with India and everything to do with Pakistan jeopardising their own future.

“You are killing the generation. If the decision was taken by the players, they can come out and say. However, if the board says that you will not play, the reputation of the country comes down,” Kapil Dev told NDTV.

The former India captain did not hold back while assessing Pakistan’s stance, stressing that such decisions go far beyond political symbolism and directly affect the careers of young cricketers. He warned that repeated withdrawals from global events could lead to Pakistan cricket becoming increasingly isolated. He also dismissed the idea that India or global fans would suffer lasting damage if the fixture does not happen.

“It is not looking bright for Pakistan. You are killing the generation. Pakistan have given us fantastic talents over the years. But if you will not allow these boys to play in the World Cup, you are killing the generation and hurting the game. You are being unfair to your own players,” he added.

“The emotions and spectators will be impacted. But, in the long run, no one will miss them. People will not think about it for a long time and they will ultimately move on,” he concluded.

ICC faces financial strain as Pakistan takes a gamble

Beyond the sporting fallout, the boycott has placed the International Cricket Council in a difficult position. India–Pakistan matches are the commercial engine of ICC tournaments, often driving a significant share of broadcast and sponsorship revenue.

Industry estimates suggest that over 40 per cent of the current ICC broadcast cycle’s value is generated by India–Pakistan fixtures alone. In recent tournaments, each match between the two rivals has reportedly been valued at around USD 250 million (approximately INR 2289 crore). The cancellation of the T20 World Cup encounter could prompt broadcasters to seek compensation or renegotiate contracts, an outcome that would impact all member nations, not just Pakistan.

With concerns growing over precedent and financial stability, the ICC may consider enforcing some firm measures.
