Dewald Brevis has only scored 86 runs from four innings during the ongoing T20 World Cup. However, a player of his calibre won’t stay quiet for too long, and that is why former Test opener Aakash Chopra called him the X-factor player ahead of the Super 8 clash between India and South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, February 22.
Chopra mentioned that Brevis has the ability to turn the game around in no time. In 26 T20Is, the 22-year-old has scored 576 runs at a staggering strike rate of 163.18. Last year in August, Brevis scored one of the most destructive centuries in T20I cricket, as he amassed an unbeaten 125 off 56 balls against Australia in Darwin.
“Dewald Brevis hasn’t fired thus far, but the guy can fire. The Chennai guys are also saying that he can fire. He hasn’t scored too many runs thus far, but he is that X-factor. He comes at No. 4, and he has the ability to change the game quickly,” Chopra said in a video shared on his official YouTube channel.
Chopra also suggested an aggressive ploy that could help India see the back of Brevis. While mentioning Jasprit Burmah’s impressive record against the right-handed batter, the cricketer-turned-commentator suggested that the former could bowl bouncers to him by having two fielders in the deep.
“I would say get Bumrah and bowl bouncers at him. Bumrah has bowled him hardly four balls and has dismissed him once or twice. It’s a decent-sized ground. You need to bowl bouncers at him by keeping two fielders in the deep,” he added.
India and South Africa advanced to the Super 8 after maintaining perfect records in the group stage. The Men in Blue defeated the USA, Pakistan, Namibia, and the Netherlands in Group A. Meanwhile, South Africa eased past Afghanistan, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada in Group D.
