Sri Lanka’s build-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has taken an unwanted turn after young fast bowler Eshan Malinga suffered a shoulder injury during the second T20I against England in Pallekele. The 24-year-old pacer, who has been one of Sri Lanka’s rising stars, is now facing a race against time to be fit for the upcoming marquee event, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
Malinga’s injury occurred in the eighth over of England’s chase shortly after a rain delay, when he appeared to twist his left, non-bowling shoulder upon delivery. He immediately clutched his shoulder and collapsed on the floor during his follow-through, prompting medical attention and his early departure from the field.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed the severity of the issue and provided further update about the injury that Malinga will return to Colombo for an MRI scan.
“He will return to Colombo today, where he will undergo an MRI scan to assess the extent of the injury and determine the next course of action,” stated an SLC media release.
It’s a major blow for a bowler who had steadily claimed his place in Sri Lanka’s team following an impressive debut Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and had taken eight wickets in eight T20Is since his debut in November, showcasing pace and strike ability that had made him a strong contender for the World Cup squad.
With SLC yet to officially name their final 15-member World Cup squad, uncertainty now surrounds Malinga’s spot. Any changes to the squad after the January 31 submission deadline would require ICC approval. In the immediate term, Sri Lanka are yet to announce a direct replacement for Malinga in their T20I setup, but Pramod Madushan, initially cover for Dushmantha Chameera, is expected to be called into action.
‘Losing him midway affected us’ – Dasun Shanaka reflects after series loss against England
Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka, spoke after his team’s T20I series loss against the visitors.
“We did a lot of things right, so I wouldn’t blame the rain. Eshan Malinga’s injury played a part – he’s a very good death bowler and losing him midway affected us. I’m happy with the batting performance, he said after the match.
Sri Lanka were defending a fighting total of 189 runs, but the unlikely injury to one of their pacer proved costly for them. Malinga could bowl only eight balls before going off. Tom Banton was named Player of the Match for his outstanding half-century.
