Pakistan clashed with Canada in Match 22 of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Nassau County Stadium in New York on Tuesday, June 11. Pakistan won the toss and opted to field first. Mohammad Amir picked the first wicket for Pakistan as cleaned up Navneet Dhaliwal in the third over. Aaron Johnson did the toiling as other batters kept losing their wickets. Johnson scored a valuable 52 runs before getting dismissed in the 14th over.

Canada managed just 106 runs on the board and Pakistan sensed an opportunity. The bowlers did their job as Amir and Haris Rauf picked two wickets each. Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah pitched in with one wicket apiece. For Canada, only three batters crossed the double-digit mark as rest were bundled up in a matter of time.

While chasing, Pakistan were in control of the game before Saim Ayub was dismissed in the fifth over. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan showed resistance and scored a run-a-ball. The duo partnered for a gritty 63-run stand for the third wicket and Babar was dismissed for 33 in the 15th over. Fakhar Zaman was picked up by Jeremy Gordon subsequently but the Men-In-Green had one foot over the line. Rizwan remained unbeaten on 53 in as many balls and Pakistan won their first game of the tournament.

“Good for us. We needed this win. Credit to team. We started well and took wickets with the new ball. We had NRR on the back of the mind. The first six overs are very crucial here. You assess after 6 overs. Then we tried to take on the spinners. We are going to go with the same mindset. The conditions at Florida should be better from here as well. I got out to the same shot. So, I was angry. I still try my level best,” said Babar in the post-match presentation.
