Australia got off to a positive start to their T20 World Cup 2024 when the Mitchell Marsh-led side took on Oman in the 10th game of the tournament on Thursday, June 6. Despite registering a win against Oman, Australia hit a worrying obstacle as ace pacer Mitchell Starc went down with an injury.

The 34-year-old winced and grabbed hold of his calf after bowling the first delivery of his final over against Oman. Starc soon walked off the field without completing his over against Oman in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

The ace pacer was then substituted by Cameron Green. Meanwhile, physios did come in to give him the on-field treatment, as Glenn Maxwell came in to complete the incomplete over of Starc.

Australia managed to register a win against Oman, as the side posted a total of 164 runs, and limited Oman to a total of 125 runs, winning the game by 39 runs and registering their first win of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Starcy was just a cramp so didn’t want to take a chance: Mitchell Marsh

After the win, Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh came forward to provide an update on Starc’s injury. He revealed that the decision to take Starc off the field was a precautionary one and that they did not want to take any chances.

“Starcy was just a cramp so didn’t want to take a chance. When Starcy says I am okay to go off you let him go off,” Mitchell Marsh was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

Furthermore, Marsh talked about how good it was to get the win and how the World Cup is going old school and big scores won’t be regular in the competition.

“Close game. Good to get the win. It’s not going to be the 200 types in this tournament. We are kind of going to the old T20 style here in this tournament,” Marsh said.

“Took his time and showed his experience. We are looking forward to playing England. Different conditions here. Oman v Australia was a tight one, great for the game of cricket. There is sun here and we will enjoy that. It’s going to be a great game,” he added.
