The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025 has raised serious concerns around player security. Following repeated pitch invasions during Baroda’s clash against Punjab, where fans stormed the field to meet Hardik Pandya, the upcoming Baroda vs Gujarat fixture has been shifted to ensure better safety measures.

The Baroda-Gujarat match, originally scheduled to take place on December 4 at Hyderabad’s Gymkhana Ground, will now be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The decision comes after security concerns were flagged when fans breached the boundary multiple times in Baroda’s previous game. Authorities opted for the international venue as it provides tighter security protocols, better crowd control infrastructure, and more room to manage spectators.

Pandya’s much-awaited comeback drew massive crowds in Hyderabad. During the Punjab match, one fan sprinted onto the pitch, reached the all-rounder, and managed to take a selfie before security intervened. Several more pitch invasions followed, forcing brief stoppages. These incidents raised questions within state associations and team management, leading to an immediate review of safety procedures. With Hardik being one of India’s most followed cricketers, authorities were keen to avoid a repeat.

Hardik Pandya named in India squad for SA T20Is

Returning to action after more than two months of rehabilitation for a quadricep injury, the 32-year-old opened the bowling for Baroda. However, his comeback with the ball was far from what he had imagined as he conceded 52 runs in four overs. His only wicket came in the 14th over, dismissing Anmolpreet Singh, who had already scored 69 off 32 balls.

However, Hardik’s batting took Baroda over the line. Walking in after a strong opening stand, he scored an unbeaten 77 off 42 balls, including seven boundaries and four sixes. A brilliant 101-run partnership with Shivalik Sharma kept Baroda ahead of the required rate. With 13 needed off 9 balls, Hardik smashed consecutive sixes, sealing the game and guiding Baroda to a seven-wicket win.

Notably, the BCCI recently announced India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against South Africa, confirming Hardik’s return. Having last played for India in September during the Asia Cup, the all-rounder’s comeback is set to strengthen India’s middle order.
