Surrey sign India seamer Auqib Nabi for County Championship run-in

Surrey have signed Indian seamer Auqib Nabi, 29, for three County Championship Division One matches as the club seeks to strengthen its bowling attack during the closing weeks of the 2026 season. Nabi received his work visa clearance on August 30, 2026, and departed for England on the first available flight.

He is available for Surrey’s two home fixtures against Yorkshire and Glamorgan at The Oval, along with the trip to Hove to face Sussex. Nabi is expected to make his county debut against Yorkshire on September 2, 2026.

“With the exceptionally challenging schedule of six games in six weeks, with minimal recovery between matches along with international fixtures, we’ve had to add options to our bowling stocks for the County Championship run-in.” said Alec Stewart, Director of Cricket as quoted by BBC.

Nabi’s rise to prominence came through a standout Ranji Trophy campaign in which he claimed 60 wickets for Jammu and Kashmir at an average of just over 12.5 runs per wicket, earning him the player of the tournament award. That haul placed him among the most prolific seamers in the competition and drew the attention of national selectors.

Building on that form, Nabi went on to represent the India A side earlier in the summer of 2026. He was subsequently included in India’s Test squad for the series against Sri Lanka, called up as a replacement for injured Jasprit Bumrah. Although Nabi did not get the opportunity to make his Test debut during that series, the call-up underlined his standing in the national setup. His availability for Surrey is timed to coincide with the gap before India’s upcoming Test tour of New Zealand.
