Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed head coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2027 season, the franchise announced on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The 54-year-old replaces Hemang Badani, who has held the position since 2024. Ganguly’s appointment marks a significant development for the franchise as it seeks to improve on a sixth-place finish in the IPL 2026 season.
Ganguly’s association with Delhi Capitals extends back to 2019, when he first joined the franchise as an Advisor. During that inaugural season, the team reached the IPL playoffs for the first time since 2012, working alongside then-Head Coach Ricky Ponting. After serving as BCCI President from October 2019 to October 2022, Ganguly returned to the Capitals in January 2023 as Director of Cricket, overseeing the men’s and women’s squads at the franchise.
“I am looking forward to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL. Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years. I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, which makes this an exciting responsibility for me. We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past. I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team,” Ganguly said in a statement released by DC.
Ganguly’s history with Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals Chairman & Co-owner and JSW Sports Founder, Parth Jindal, welcomed Sourav Ganguly with excitement.
“Dada is and has always been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals family. I am incredibly proud and honoured to announce that one of the greatest Indian captains and administrators is now stepping into coaching by taking over as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals. I am excited to see him take on this role and I’m sure that under his guidance and visionary leadership Delhi Capitals will be best prepared to challenge for the IPL title. I cannot wait for all our players and staff to learn from Dada and am looking forward to seeing DC in action at the earliest,” said Jindal .
The appointment came after Delhi Capitals missed the IPL playoffs in both 2025 and 2026, marking a challenging period for the franchise. Ganguly’s extensive experience within the organisation and his previous success in helping the team reach the playoffs in 2019 positioned him to lead the squad’s revival efforts. The franchise had never won an IPL title, and the new coaching appointment signalled an intent to challenge for the championship in the coming season.
