England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler has showered high praise on India’s young superstar Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for his heroics with India A in the final of the recently concluded Tri-Nation series in Sri Lanka.
15-year-old Sooryavanshi has taken the cricketing world by storm, leaving a lasting impression Buttler. The England and Gujarat Titans cricketer has been at the forefront of praise for the starlet and spoke of the incident he was involved in with the Sri Lanka A player, Vinesh Halambage, during the super over in India A’s third match of the series.
“First of all, he was involved in a heated post-match clash after India A’s Super Over defeat to Sri Lanka A. The 15-year-old exchanged a few words and briefly shoved a Sri Lankan player following reported sledging during the match. So the cricket authority stepped in quickly with warnings and disciplinary reviews following the incident, but he has instantly redeemed himself in the next game,” Buttler said, speaking on the “For the Love of Cricket” podcast.
When the two teams met in the finals of the tournament, Sooryavanshi made history by smashing an 11-ball half-century, the fastest fifty in List A history, in a knock which saw him score 94 in just 28 balls. His innings set the platform for India A to reach a total of 377 for 9 in their 50 overs, taking the attack to the Sri Lanka A bowlers in the powerplay. Buttler praised Sooryavanshi for his record and expressed his awe at the southpaw breaking records at such a young age.
“But he has instantly redeemed himself. In the next game, he hit an 11-ball 50 for India A, the fastest half-century in the history of List A 50-over cricket. So he’s at it again. It’s something we’ve never seen before, and he’s worrying how many records and things he keeps ticking off so quickly,” Buttler added.
Sooryavanshi has been named in the Indian squads for the series against Ireland and England, becoming the youngest player called up to India’s senior side, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record.
