How did Day 3 went in the first Test between Sri Lanka and India?

Day 3 saw India’s spinners wreak havoc on Sri Lanka at Galle on August 17. India resumed their innings with one wicket in hand and batted for just five minutes, adding 4 runs to their total. Asitha Fernando finished with figures of 2/63.

Sri Lanka then began their innings but were bowled out for 284. The hosts’ top-order batters lost their wickets cheaply before Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella steadied the innings with a 146-run partnership.

For India, Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja bowled brilliantly to wrap up Sri Lanka’s innings. As India began their second innings, rain interrupted play and forced the umpires to call stumps.

Top batting performances of the match — Sonal Dinusha

Left-handed batter Sonal Dinusha is the top batting performer of the day. He scored his ton in 168 balls including four boundaries and two maximums. He formed a brilliant partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella who also contributed 80 runs from his side. They both forged together 146-run partnership in 213 balls for the sixth wicket to stable the Sri Lankan’s innings.

Best bowling spells — Manav Suthar

Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar is the top bowling performer of the day. He returned with the figures of 4/76 in 21.4 overs. He dismissed Lahiru Udara, Dinesh Chandimal, Prabath Jayasuriya and Lahiru Kumara. He got good support from the experienced spinner Ravindra Jadeja who took 3/57 and rest all bowlers took one wicket each.

Records Broken and Major Milestones Achieved

  • Ravindra Jadeja scalped his 350th Test wickets.
  • He became the third left-arm spinner to take 350 Test wickets.
  • He is the fifth Indian bowler to take 350 Test wickets.
  • He became the fourth cricketer to have a double of 4000-plus runs and 350-plus wickets in red-ball cricket.
