Red-ball cricket resumes in the island nation, as Sri Lanka (SL) are all set to go up against India (IND) in the first Test of the two-match series in a promising contest at the Galle International Stadium, which gets underway on Saturday, August 15. The series is a crucial part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.

Sri Lanka will be playing at home with a view to gaining crucial points in the WTC 2025-27 cycle and climbing up the ladder. Meanwhile, their skipper Dhananjaya de Silva also believes that they will be having an advantage over the Indians, given the visiting side’s recent struggles against spin bowling. With Galle expected to be a rank-turner, the Lankan Lions will be confident of putting up a show and gaining a 1-0 lead.

Shubman Gill-led India, on the other hand, have been having a mixed run in the format ever since the retirement of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin. Since 2025, they have won only one multi-match bilateral series, which shows that they have been inconsistent in terms of their match strategies. However, they have won three out of the last five Test matches, which should give them a mental boost ahead of the all-important series.

Galle International Stadium: Pitch Report

The Galle International Stadium in Galle is not only one of the most picturesque venues for Test cricket in the country but also offers a sporty wicket that puts on the table a mouthwatering contest. The upcoming clash is expected to be filled with spinners dominating the attack on both sides. While the Lankans are expected to rely on the services of Prabath Jayasuriya and Ramesh Mendis, the Indians also have the experience of Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav in their ranks. Batting first could be an ideal choice at this venue, since the pitch is expected to get better for bowling as the match moves into day three and beyond.
