Australia is set to play a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, where they will play both games at the renowned Galle venue. Notably, this series will be the last remaining Test series for the visiting side in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle (WTC 2023-25). Steve Smith will lead them in the series, featuring some young players in the squad.

Though the Australians have had a great run in Test cricket in the current cycle, some injury woes have caused a bit of drama. Stand-in captain Steve Smith suffered an elbow injury but was fortunately cleared to play the series after a review by a medical specialist was cleared to play the series. One of the other injured players was Matthew Kuhnemann, who also fractured his right thumb in the Big Bash League and underwent surgery to address the issues immediately.

In the aftermath, this was seemingly a big blow for the Australian side since Kuhnemann was set to be a key member as the wicket in Galle, is known to be a rank turner and was set to be one of the three frontline spinners with Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy, respectively. However, in a fresh development, it has turned out that the left-arm spinner was cleared to play the series after a practice session at the Allan Border field.

During the session, Kuhnemann bowled eight overs and also batted a bit facing throwdowns from the bowling coach, Andy Bichel, and was seen taking some catches while fielding as well. The whole session was overseen by the Brisbane Heat physio, Adam Smith.

Kuhnemann was impressive with ball during India tour

Speaking of Kuhnemann’s Test record so far, he has played three matches against India where he has taken nine wickets at an average of 31.11 and has the best figures of 5/16 at Indore. He also has a decent record in first-class cricket where he has played 26 games and has taken 74 wickets at an average of 34.78 and an economy of 2.86.
