Naman Dhir has made an immediate impact in his early international career, with two standout performances in the recent T20I series against New Zealand and West Indies. The right-handed batter is nine matches into his international journey and has already demonstrated the ability to deliver in high-pressure situations. His recent displays have caught the attention of India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, who has offered detailed insights into Dhir’s potential and role within the team setup.

In the opening T20I against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval, Dhir played a match-winning innings that sealed India’s four-wicket victory. He remained unbeaten on 42 off just 15 balls as India chased down 226, their highest successful chase in the T20I format, with two deliveries remaining. Days later, in the rain-affected final T20I against West Indies in Bengaluru on October 17, Dhir struck an unbeaten 24 off six balls to contribute to another Indian victory.

Kotak acknowledged Dhir’s proven capability with the bat and highlighted an often-overlooked dimension of his game. The batting coach stated that Dhir possesses bowling skills that extend beyond what he has demonstrated in first-class cricket or the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Kotak explained the strategic value of Dhir’s all-round abilities in the T20I format, noting that an off-spinner can bowl varying overs depending on the opposition’s composition and match situation. He added that Dhir is also a strong fielder who can make a meaningful contribution with the bat in the finisher’s role.

“Actually, we know he is capable of doing and we also know that he is capable of bowling more than he has in first-class cricket or Vijay Hazare [List A] Trophy and all that,” Kotak was quoted as saying by Cricinfo.

What makes Dhir a multi-dimensional player?

Kotak emphasised Dhir’s importance to the team’s recent victories, particularly in the West Indies match. The batting coach noted that while other players such as Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel featured prominently, Dhir’s contribution at the end of the innings proved crucial. Kotak described Dhir as a power-packed player who understands his role and executes it precisely, which he identified as a positive sign for the young talent’s development.

“Yesterday, there was Sanju, Abhishek, and Shreyas [Iyer] and Axar [Patel] too, but his role at the end was also very, very important. He is a power-packed player, he knows what is expected [of him] and he exactly does that, which is a great sign,” Kotak said.

Looking at Dhir’s overall profile, Kotak expressed optimism about his future prospects. The batting coach stated that while it remains early in Dhir’s international career, he views him as a very promising talent. Kotak highlighted Dhir’s batting technique, particularly his ability to build his base quickly and generate power, describing him as an exciting prospect for Indian cricket.

“It is too early, but I feel he is very promising. His batting technique, the way he builds his base quickly, the power he has, he is a very exciting talent,” he concluded.
