Shreyas Iyer‘s appointment as India’s T20I captain was seen as the beginning of a new era following Suryakumar Yadav’s successful tenure, which ended with India lifting their third T20 World Cup title. Iyer came into the role with an impressive leadership resume in the Indian Premier League, having captained Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings. However, international cricket presents a different challenge, and India’s recent performances have raised questions over whether Iyer should continue leading the T20I side.
India are currently enduring one of their worst runs in the format, having gone five matches without a win, including defeats to Ireland and England. The team was whitewashed 2-0 by Ireland before falling 0-2 behind in the ongoing five-match series against England. While a captain cannot be blamed for every defeat, the team’s inability to respond under pressure has intensified scrutiny on Iyer’s leadership.
Should Shreyas Iyer be dropped from India’s T20I team?
Was he fast-tracked into captaincy?
One of the biggest talking points is whether Iyer was promoted too quickly. Although his IPL captaincy record is impressive, success in franchise cricket does not always translate to the international stage. India had other leadership candidates within the squad.
Ishan Kishan has captaincy experience with Jharkhand in domestic cricket, while Tilak Varma has been part of the national setup for a longer period and is viewed as a future leader. Despite these options, the selectors placed their faith in Iyer, hoping his IPL success would carry over to international cricket. So far, that decision has not produced the desired results.
Too many responsibilities?
Iyer is also India’s ODI vice-captain as the team begins preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Adding full-time T20I captaincy to his workload may have increased the pressure on him. Leading the side while also being expected to perform consistently with the bat is a demanding role, particularly during a packed international calendar. At times, it has appeared that the additional responsibility has affected his decision-making and overall composure on the field.
Is captaincy affecting his batting?
Captaincy can often influence a player’s individual performances, and Iyer’s recent form has reflected that challenge. Although he played a fine half-century in the second T20I against England, he has struggled to produce consistent match-winning knocks. During the Ireland series, he failed to make a significant impact with the bat, and his performances in high-pressure situations have been below expectations.
However, dropping Iyer from the T20I side after a difficult run may be a harsh decision. Every captain goes through challenging phases, and he deserves an opportunity to learn from setbacks and respond strongly. The remaining matches against England will be crucial in determining whether he can inspire a turnaround. If the poor results continue over a longer period, the selectors may have to reconsider both the captaincy and his place in the T20I setup.
