‘Should be the norm in all formats & competitions’ – Brad Hogg backs ICC after India and Australia receive fine for slow over-rate

Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg backed the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 finalists- team India and Australia were sanctioned for slow over-rate.

Following the conclusion of the WTC final, the ICC confirmed that the Rohit Sharma-led side would lose all of their match fees for slow over-rate. In addition to this, the Aussies too were fined 80 per cent of their fees for the same. On that note, Aussie great Hogg slammed the two sides as he stated that the strategic decisions must be made during the breaks and not during the play, backing ICC’s decision.

As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, the players in the match were fined 20 per cent of their fees for every over that exceeds the allotted time. Notably, an additional 15 minutes was used towards the end of the session so as to get the final scalp to conclude the summit clash.

Furthermore, India opener Shubman Gill too was fined an additional 15 per cent.

This came after the flamboyant right-hander expressed his displeasure to the on-field umpire’s decision of his controversial dismissal. ICC made the decision as Gill breached article 2.7 which mentions ‘public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.’

Pat Cummins-led Australia brushed aside team India by 209 runs at The Oval in London on Sunday, June 11, to claim the prestigious mace. In the process, they became first team in the history to win all ICC titles across the three formats.
