Shoaib Bashir is set to retain his England central contract for the 2026-27 cycle despite playing only two Tests in the past 12 months. The ECB’s contract announcement, which had been expected this week, has been pushed back to next week, and Bashir’s name is among those set to feature on the list.

Bashir, who turns 23 next week, played twice in England’s 2-1 series loss to New Zealand this summer but was an unused squad member throughout their 3-0 win over Pakistan. His prospects of selection fell sharply after Ben Stokes’ international retirement forced England to rebalance their Test team.

Ben Stokes and Mark Wood will both drop off the contract list following their international retirements, freeing up significant funds. The ECB offered 26 men’s central contracts last year alongside four pace-bowling development contracts, and those retirements could prompt the total number of offers to grow slightly, along with some pay rises, given both were among England’s highest-earning players.

What does Bashir’s contract retention establish about ECB policy?

Bashir’s inclusion in the 2026-27 contract list reflects the ECB’s broader approach to player security, even when appearances have been limited. He was first picked on England’s tour to India in early 2024 and served as their first-choice spinner for the next 18 months. Since breaking a finger against India at Lord’s last July, however, he has played only twice, including one Test in which he did not bowl a ball, and was a peripheral figure on last winter’s tour to Australia.

Rob Key, England’s managing director, oversaw a significant change in the ECB’s contracting system in 2023 when multi-year contracts were offered for the first time. Some of those long-term deals have not worked as intended. Jonny Bairstow, for example, did not play in the final year of his contract.

“We need to make sure that we retain the best players. That’s why we’ve invested a lot more into the players in terms of salaries… I do think the players are owed a degree of security as well, because what happens if a player gets injured in June or July, and they’re on a one-year contract?,” said Gould as quoted by Cricinfo.

Several other players are also set to receive contracts or renewals. Jordan Cox, Emilio Gay, Dan Lawrence and Ollie Robinson are all expected to win deals after breaking into England’s Test team this summer. Tom Banton is set to earn his first central contract on the back of strong white-ball form, and Rehan Ahmed’s contract is set to be renewed despite him losing his spot for next month’s ODI tri-series in Pakistan.

What are the next confirmed steps for Bashir’s England involvement?

The ECB contract announcement is now expected next week. Once confirmed, Bashir’s immediate focus will shift to England’s upcoming winter schedule. England may opt for an all-seam attack on their tour to South Africa, which runs from December to January, depending on conditions. That three-match series will also mark the start of Stephen Fleming’s tenure as Test head coach.

Bashir is expected to come back into contention for England’s tour to Bangladesh in February, where frontline spin options will be required. His first season with Derbyshire has been described as quiet, but that has not altered his standing in ECB contract discussions.

Brydon Carse, who is under investigation by the Cricket Regulator after a charge of bringing the game into disrepute, is heading into the second year of a two-year contract offered last year. All-format regulars including Jofra Archer, Harry Brook and Josh Tongue are similarly in the second year of their existing deals and are not part of this announcement cycle.
