Saransh Jain credits father for Test journey, calls Ravindra Jadeja a ‘legend’

On Sunday, August 23, in Colombo, Saransh Jain stepped onto the Test cricket stage for India in the second match of the series against Sri Lanka. The 33-year-old all-rounder took the place of left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who was managing a viral infection. India had already claimed the two-match series following a 165-run victory in the opening Test at Galle.

Jain became the 320th player to represent India in Test cricket. Ravindra Jadeja, the legendary all-rounder, presented him with his debut cap and offered words of encouragement to mark the occasion. Jain’s achievement carried deep personal meaning, rooted in his family’s resilience and his father’s unwavering support through difficult times.

Tribute to his father’s influence and support

“First of all, I would like to thank God and after that my family. My father is the closest person to me, so I would tell him first (about making Test debut). I started playing cricket because of him, and I will continue to play for him,” Jain was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Jain’s father, Subodh, was diagnosed with mouth cancer in 2014 but continued to encourage his son to pursue cricket despite the family’s challenges. That support shaped Jain’s career path and remained central to his motivation throughout his domestic cricket journey. Jain flourished under Chandrakant Pandit and became a consistent all-rounder in domestic cricket, performing regularly in India A matches and the Ranji Trophy.

Receiving the cap from Ravindra Jadeja

Jain expressed his gratitude for receiving his cap from Ravindra Jadeja, recognising the value of learning from an all-rounder at the highest level. The debutant understood that Jadeja’s experience and guidance would be invaluable as he began his Test career.

“Jaddu bhai is a legend and if I am getting the cap from him, it will only benefit me. I am very happy. I wanted to get a cap from an all-rounder who will motivate me. I am an all-rounder myself, so I will try to fulfil my dream,” Jain added.

Jadeja’s words on handling Test cricket debut

Jadeja acknowledged Jain’s long journey through domestic cricket and the hard work that had earned him this opportunity. The senior player recognised the significance of the moment for the debutant and offered his perspective on what lay ahead.

“Test cap No. 320, Saransh, well done,” Jadeja said.

Jadeja’s final words to Jain focused on managing the mental aspect of Test cricket and drawing on the experience the debutant had already accumulated. He encouraged Jain to approach his Test debut with the same mindset that had served him well in domestic cricket.

“Just like you have performed in so many domestic matches, play like you are playing another First-Class match. You have all the other 14 players with you to support you. Enjoy this moment instead of taking pressure,” Jadeja concluded.
