Left-handed batter Saif Zaib will leave Northamptonshire for Hampshire, despite having one year remaining on his contract at the county. The 28-year-old communicated to Northants at the close of the 2026 season that he no longer saw his future at the club, and although the county held talks in an attempt to retain him, those conversations did not alter his decision.
Zaib had renewed his Northants deal in 2025, making the decision to seek a fresh challenge elsewhere all the more notable. According to Cricinfo, the move to Hampshire has now been confirmed. During the 2025 County Championship campaign, Zaib finished as the country’s top run-getter, compiling 1425 runs at an average of 64.77 with six centuries to his name.
His output remained substantial the following summer, when he scored 856 runs at 42.80 with three hundreds, even as Northants fell just short of securing promotion from Division Two. Away from the Championship, Zaib turned out for Southern Brave in the Hundred during the 2026 summer and represented Canada in the Super60 tournament.
He is presently featuring for Sudur Paschim Royals in the Nepal Premier League. Zaib made his first-class debut for Northamptonshire against Kent on August 4, 2015. Northamptonshire did win the T20 Blast in 2026, giving the county a trophy despite the Division Two disappointment.
“The 28-year-old had informed the club at the end of the season that he did not see his future career at Northamptonshire and despite discussions to reverse that decision, he will now leave the club,” Northamptonshire said in a statement as quoted by Cricinfo.
Why is Hampshire signing Zaib?
Hampshire dropped out of Division One of the County Championship in 2026 and have since set their sights on bouncing straight back to the top flight. A batsman with Zaib’s two-season record of consistent Championship run-scoring fits precisely into that rebuilding plan.
The county has also brought in Rishi Patel from Leicestershire and Fynn Hudson-Prentice from Sussex as part of a wider squad overhaul. Hampshire have had to absorb the retirement of Liam Dawson from red-ball cricket alongside the exit of James Vince, and adding proven, high-volume run-scorers has become a clear priority ahead of the 2027 season.
“It’s been a real honour to represent Northamptonshire CCC, especially as the club has been such a big part of my life for so long. I’ll always be grateful for the memories, friendships and experiences I’ve had along the way. To the supporters, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love and support you’ve shown me over the years. It’s meant so much to me and sharing those special moments with you is something I’ll always treasure,” said Zaib.
