Team India gave South Africa a run for their money on Day 1 of the second Test at Newlands, Cape Town as they bundled them out for 55 in the first session itself. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was in top form as he scalped his career-best figures of 6/15 in nine overs and claimed his third fifer in Tests.

Siraj’s accurate bowling coupled with inputs from the senior members brought South Africa down to their knees. The right-arm seamer had taken three wickets in his first seven overs as he came on to bowl the 16th over of the innings with the Proteas on 34/4. Siraj first got rid of last game’s half-centurion David Bedingham as dangerous Marco Jansen walked out to the crease.

After seeing Jansen defending his first two balls, former India captain Virat Kohli suggested the seamer to bowl him an outswinger that will result in him nicking it off. Siraj listened to his former skipper’s advice and bowled the very next ball just outside Jansen’s off stump bringing him on the front foot. The South African all-rounder ended up edging the ball straight to wicketkeeper KL Rahul as Siraj completed his five-wicket haul.

The Hyderabad-born seamer finished the innings with his first-ever 6-fer in Tests as South Africa were bundled out for their lowest score since 1933. Apart from Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah (2/25) and Mukesh Kumar (2/0) also picked up two wickets each.

Rohit Sharma scored 39 in India’s innings

Meanwhile, in the second innings, India once again lost opener Yashasvi Jaiswal cheaply as he chopped one back onto his stumps against Kagiso Rabada and got dismissed for a duck. However, captain Rohit Sharma was looking in fine touch and added 55 runs for the second wicket with Shubman Gill.
