Rob Key speaks on Stephen Fleming’s appointment & Ben Stokes’ potential return

England Men’s Director of Cricket Rob Key has elaborated on the appointment of former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as England Men’s Test coach, putting his faith in the Kiwi man to take the team forward.

Fleming will take over the side after the series against Pakistan in August, with his first assignment being an away tour against South Africa in December of the year. The role fell vacant following Brendon McCullum stepping down after the 2-1 loss to the Black Caps. McCullum will continue his role as the white-ball coach.

England’s 4-1 loss away to Australia, along with off-field events that took place on the tour, resulted in major scrutiny over McCullum’s position. Taking over in 2022, McCullum revolutionised the team by introducing a style of play which relied on taking the game to the opposition. In 49 matches under the former Black Caps skipper, England won 27, lost 20 and drew two. Key expressed his belief in Fleming being able to refine the team on the base which McCullum had built.

“Four years ago, for me, it was about changing the mentality of this England team, and I think Brendon [McCullum] and Ben [Stokes] did that brilliantly. The last six months have been really tough, sure, but there’s been so much good stuff that has happened, and you don’t want to lose that.

“So it’s really important that you don’t bring someone in where the pendulum shifts right the way to the other side and you become risk-averse, lacking optimism, all of those things and I think Stephen Fleming will just refine what is a potentially world-class team,” Key told via BBC Test Match Special. 

Key further added that English cricket is in a transition phase, having seen the retirements of various experienced stars, despite which the team has immense potential. He believes that Fleming could help the team sustain their potential and convert it into results against the major teams. 

“At the moment, we’ve lost an entire generation, bar Joe Root, of players. We’ve lost over a thousand wickets in the last, what, two, three years for different reasons, but there is so much potential there and Stephen Fleming will be the person, I believe, who can really realise that potential.

“English cricket has had periods where we’ve been really good for a bit and then it falls off. We beat the sides below us and we compete against the ones above us. We want to create a system and we want to make sure that English cricket actually not only has success, sustains it, and I think Fleming will bring all of that,” he added.

‘Anything is possible’ – Key on Stokes’ potential comeback

Another major event which shook English cricket in the last month was Test captain Ben Stokes‘ abrupt retirement announcement at the end of the New Zealand series. Speculations surrounding Stokes’ relationship with the management team have filled the press, with Key quashing the rumours of a rift and stating that the doors are always open for the mercurial all-rounder’s return.

“It would be a brilliant story if he does [make a comeback to the side]. No, he hasn’t [indicated a change of heart], but I wouldn’t be surprised. Anything is possible with Ben,” Key told Sky Sports News.

England will play Pakistan in a three-match Test series, with the first match set to commence on August 19 at Headingley. Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will fill in for the series on an interim basis, with Joe Root returning as captain of the side permanently.
