PSL 2026: Fakhar Zaman given two-match ban in ball tampering charges

PSL 2026 Fakhar Zaman given two-match ban in ball tampering charges

Pakistan batter Fakhar Zaman has been handed a two-match ban for ball tampering during Lahore Qalandars’ game against Karachi Kings on Sunday, March 29, in the 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Match referee Roshan Mahanama gave out the verdict against the top-order batter and found him in breach of Article 41.3 of the PSL code of conduct. The 35-year-old has received the maximum penalty for his antics and will now miss the games against Multan Sultans and Islamabad United. The hearing with match referee Mahanama had to go ahead after Zaman contested the charges.

The incident came to light during the final over of the game, where Karachi Kings needed 14 to win the game. Before the start of the over, Zaman, along with captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and bowler Haris Rauf, had a long conversation before the left-handed batter was seen pressing hard on the ball. Umpire Faisal Afridi quickly asked for the ball for a quick inspection and, after consulting with the other umpire, Sharfuddoula, decided to hand a five-run penalty to the Lahore-outfit and ordered a replacement ball.

With the target down to nine runs following the penalty, Karachi Kings chased down with three balls to spare.

“Match Referee Roshan Mahanama conducted the disciplinary hearing and made the determination after reviewing all evidence and providing an opportunity of personal hearing to Fakhar. Lahore Qalandars Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, Team Director Sameen Rana and Team Manager Farooq Anwar were also present during the hearing,” a statement from the PCB said.

Zaman will now have the option to appeal against the decision under the PSL code of conduct within the next 48 hours.

Lahore Qalandars are the two-time defending champions of the PSL. The Afridi-led side opened their campaign with a 69-run victory over newcomers Hyderabad Kingsmen before suffering a defeat against rivals Karachi Kings. Zaman scored 53 in their opening match to pick up the Player of the Match award. The opening batter will be a huge miss for his side as they look to return to winning ways against Multan Sultans on Friday, April 3.
