PCB waives off fine imposed on Azam Khan for displaying Palestine flag during National T20 Cup

In a recent development, the Pakistan Cricket Board has announced that they will be waiving the fine imposed on Azam Khan for displaying the Palestine flag on his bat during a National T20 Cup domestic tournament game in Karachi. However, no reason has been given for lifting the match fee fine of 50% levied earlier.

The wicketkeeper-batter was initially fined for breaching clothing and equipment regulations on November 26, as he had violated Article 2.4 of the PCB code of conduct for players and players’ support personnel for repeatedly failing to comply with the instruction or directive of an umpire during the match.

The ICC regulation for clothing and equipment prohibits players from displaying messages that carry political, religious, or racial activities or causes.

However, although Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan had shown support for Palestinians on social media, no action was taken against him as it was deemed his personal opinion. This incident occurred during the recently concluded ICC ODI World Cup 2023, where Rizwan dedicated his century to the Palestinians after an outstanding performance in the record run chase against Sri Lanka.

Azam Khan, renowned for his powerful hitting in the T20 format, hasn’t featured in the national side since 2021. He has consistently played in various franchise cricket leagues globally and remains in high demand due to his ability to effortlessly hit big sixes, showcasing his brute strength.

ICC doesn’t allow players to display messages related to politics

The ICC strictly prohibits players from displaying messages related to politics, religion, etc., on their clothing and equipment. This incident has sparked a social media debate, with some endorsing Azam’s gesture, while others argue for the separation of cricket and politics.

Currently, the Pakistan cricket team are gearing up for a three-match Test series against Australia, and the PCB has organized a training camp in Rawalpindi. The series kicks off with a four-day warm-up match against Prime Minister’s XI on December 6 at Manuka Oval, Canberra, followed by the first Test on December 16 at Perth Stadium, Perth.
