‘One area that needs to be looked at in future’ – Sourav Ganguly demands for for balanced contest between bat and ball in IPL

Former India captain and current Delhi Capitals (DC) director of cricket, Sourav Ganguly, has raised concerns over the lopsided contest between bat and ball in the ongoing IPL season. With flat pitches and new rules favoring batters, bowlers have been almost unsuccessful as gigantic totals have become the norm.

The IPL has witnessed a run-fest this year, with several teams breaching the 200-run mark with ease. Powerful hitting from batters combined with batter-friendly tracks has meant that bowlers have been smashed all around the park. The implementation of the ‘Impact Player’ rule, allowing an additional batter as a substitute, has further added to the problem.

Ganguly emphasized the need to regain some equality, “Not easy for the bowlers. They are being carted all over and that’s one area that needs to be looked at in the future, the balance between bat and ball,” Ganguly said at the pre-match press conference as quoted by India Today.

The legendary opener cited instances like SunRisers Hyderabad scoring 125 runs in the powerplay and Travis Head’s 32-ball 89 as examples of the bowlers’ woes.”Our batting is also strong, we have given away 400 runs but scored them too. The wicket here is too good, batting friendly wicket,” Ganguly added.

The former batter is not the only one who has spoken about the ongoing concern about the bowlers; the legendary Sunil Gavaskar has previously asked for larger boundaries.

With DC taking on Mumbai Indians (MI) in their next clash on 27th April at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Ganguly also announced that star batter David Warner and fast bowler Ishant Sharma won’t be available for the upcoming clash.

Judging by the points tally, the hosts are currently in the sixth position with eight points, while the visitors are sitting in the ninth position with six points. Both teams are looking for a win to better their position in the standing and have a better chance of qualifying for the playoffs.
