India vs England, Lord’s Test in 2014

India managed to end their 28-year wait for a Test win at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in 2014 as they defeated England by 95 runs in the second Test of the five-match series.

England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and opted to field first at the Home of Cricket. India were staring down the barrel in the first innings at 145/7. However, Ajinkya Rahane and Bhuvneshwar Kumar showed a lot of grit and determination to forge a 90-run partnership for the eighth wicket. The former scored a fluent century, amassing 103 off just 154 balls with the help of 15 fours and one six. Bhuvneshwar, on the other hand, scored a crucial 36. Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma also made vital contributions as the tourists finished on 295.

In their first innings, England were lifted by Gary Ballance’s century and Liam Plunkett’s unbeaten fifty as they took the Three Lions to 319. The home side earned a lead of 23 runs. Bhuvneshwar bagged a six-for.

Murali Vijay gave a great account of his resiliance as he made 95 off 247 deliveries. Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar also slammed counter-attacking half-centuries as India finished on 342.

In the fourth innings, England were chasing a 319-run target. Cook and Ballance got themselves off to starts, but they couldn’t capitalise. Joe Root scored a patient 66, while Moeen Ali contributed with a 147-ball 39. However, Ishant’s fiery spell was too hot to handle for the England batters. The Delhi speedster tormented the opposition by bowling short on the uneven surface. He eventually finished with figures of 7/74 as England were bowled out for 223. Ishant’s heroics earned him the Player of the Match award as India won their first Test match at the venue since 1986.

India took a 1-0 lead in the series after the first Test had ended in a draw. However, England won the next three Tests comprehensively to bag the series.
