A splendid five-fer from Mohammed Shami on his comeback, followed by Virat Kohli’s masterclass helped India defeat the unbeaten New Zealand by a margin of four wickets, despite a stunning century from Daryl Mitchell and a hard-fought 75 from Rachin Ravindra.

Speaking about the game, India won the toss and opted to field first in Dharamsala. The Kiwis had an awful start as both the openers departed after a short stay with Mohammed Siraj picking up the wicket of the dangerous Devon Conway for a duck while Mohammed Shami knocked over Will Young for 17 with lethal bowling. Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra led the rescue with a solid 159-run stand, and both batters reached their respective half-centuries in the course of the partnership.

They took charge against the likes of Kuldeep Yadav taking him to the cleaners before Mohammed Shami chipped in with the wicket by breaking the big stand. From thereon, India chipped in with wickets at regular intervals, with Shami being the chief architect. However, Daryl Mitchell went on to score his century, becoming the second New Zealander to score an ODI World Cup century against India. However, some cunning bowling from the pace bowlers helped India bowl out New Zealand for 273.

Chasing 274, India got off to a flying start as Rohit Sharma took the bowlers to the cleaners with impeccable strokeplay, smashing 46 runs off 40 balls including eight boundaries before Ferguson drew the first blood with a peach of a delivery. Two overs later, Shubman Gill became the second victim of Ferguson after scoring 26.

The duo of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer added valuable 52 runs to the total while KL Rahul and Kohli added another 54 runs in partnership. Boult picked the wicket of Iyer by setting him up with a short ball while Santner trapped Rahul leg before wicket (LBW) for 27. A mix-up at the crease meant Suryakumar Yadav dismissed by run-out. Kohli and Jadeja held their nerves on a tricky surface with a half-century stand to help India beat New Zealand by 4 wickets in the ODI World Cup 2023 fixture.
