Northamptonshire County Cricket Club have announced that Australian international Nathan McSweeney will remain with the club for the 2027 season. The 27-year-old is set to return for a second consecutive year and will be available for the entire campaign.
McSweeney has already made a significant impact this season, scoring three centuries and leading Northamptonshire’s run charts in the County Championship with 589 runs at an average of just under 50.
“I’m delighted to be extending my time with Northamptonshire. From the moment I arrived I was made to feel welcome by the players, coaches, staff and supporters, and that made the decision to stay a very easy one,” said McSweeney as quoted by Northamptonshire.
McSweeney has established himself as a key figure in Northamptonshire’s white-ball setup, combining composure at the crease with strong leadership on the field. Recently appointed as the club’s One-Day Cup captain, the Australian has impressed both with his performances and influence within the squad. Head coach Darren Lehmann praised McSweeney’s impact, highlighting the significant contribution he has made during his short spell with the club so far.
“I’m grateful for the faith the Club has shown in me and I’m looking forward to continuing to contribute both on and off the field. Hopefully there are plenty of successful moments ahead for Northamptonshire, and I’m excited to be a part of that journey,” said McSweeney.
“We’re so pleased that someone of Nathan’s calibre is deciding to stay with us. He’s been outstanding on and off the field and he’s a leader within our group who’s shown a love for the Club. He’s worked on his game and he wants to continue to help other players out which is very good for our culture and the development of our players,” said Lehmann.
Northamptonshire have enjoyed an outstanding 2026 season across formats. They currently sit atop the T20 Blast standings after winning all eight of their matches, while in the County Championship Division Two, they occupy third place with three victories from eight games, underlining their strong form in both white-ball and red-ball cricket.
