Shree Charani recently disclosed an interesting story on why she changed her bowling style from medium pace to spin in her childhood. The youngster revealed that during while playing cricket in her village, she used to struggle in troubling batters as a medium pacer. The lack of success and consistency led to switch to bowling spin.

The 21-year-old left-arm spinner, who has had an impressive beginning to her white-ball international career, also recounted an incident which demonstrated the confidence her mother had in her abilities.  Charani concluded by hoping that she helps the team succeed at the upcoming mega event.

“In my village, we played on turf where if the ball went out of bounds, it was considered out. Back then, I was a medium pacer, but I wasn’t very effective, batters rarely got out. That’s when I decided to become a spinner. Once I started bowling spin, I began picking wickets consistently because batters struggled against my deliveries. That’s how my journey as a spinner began,” stated Charani while speaking to JioStar.

“My mother always had confidence that I would make it big in cricket. Once, when we went to a gold shop in Kadapa, the cashier asked about the kit bag I was carrying. My mom replied, ‘She plays cricket and one day she will play for India’. She was the first person who believed in me. Everyone dreams of playing for India and in a World Cup. I feel lucky to have this opportunity, and I will try my best to do well for the team and for India,” she added.

India Women will kickstart the Women’s World Cup co-hosts Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday, September 30. Charani is expected to play a vital role and contribute to the success of the spin-bowling department.
