The Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for Bihar and Jharkhand, Dr D Sudhakara Rao, has revealed that former India captain and current Chennai Super Kings (CSK) wicketkeeper MS Dhoni was the highest taxpaying individual in Bihar and Jharkhand combined.
Though the authorities did not reveal the exact amount of income tax Dhoni paid, they did state he ranks number one. The 44-year-old ranks above major industrial companies like Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) and Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDI). The tax authorities collected as much as INR 20,000 crore in taxes, with more than 60 per cent coming from the state of Jharkhand alone.
“The total collection from Bihar and Jharkhand during the financial year of 2025-26 was around Rs 20,000 crore, of which Rs 12,000 crore was collected only from Jharkhand,” Dr D Sudhakara Rao was quoted as saying via MoneyControl.
“M S Dhoni was the highest individual taxpayer combining Bihar and Jharkhand during the previous financial year,” he added.
Despite ending his international career more than five years ago, Dhoni is still one of the most popular cricketers in the country due to his continued strong affiliation with CSK. The right-handed batter is still visible in various television commercials, making sure he has a steady income source.
Dhoni is still nursing his calf injury, which he sustained before the start of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). Though he is still part of the squad and regularly trains with his teammates, the former skipper is yet to play a single game this season, in what could be his final season in the 20-over tournament.
CSK are in with a chance of qualifying for the playoffs despite their roller coaster form this season. The five-time champions are currently sixth in the standings with 10 points, but are only two points away from the top four places. They face the Lucknow Super Giants in their next fixture on Sunday, May 10.
